Why case types matter

Every matter in the Patna High Court is registered under a case type with a number and year — for example, CWJC No. 1234 of 2025. The case type tells you what kind of proceeding it is, which bench may hear it, and how it is listed. Knowing it makes it easier to follow your matter on the cause list and the court’s case-status service.

Writ jurisdiction

  • CWJC — Civil Writ Jurisdiction Case: writ petitions under Article 226 on civil matters, such as service, land and revenue orders, licences, tenders and action by public authorities
  • Cr.WJC — Criminal Writ Jurisdiction Case: writ petitions on criminal-side issues, such as illegal detention or police inaction

Criminal miscellaneous matters

  • Cr.Misc. — used for regular bail, anticipatory bail and quashing petitions
  • Quashing petitions are filed under the High Court’s inherent powers, now in Section 528 BNSS (formerly Section 482 CrPC)

Miscellaneous jurisdiction

  • MJC — Miscellaneous Jurisdiction Case: commonly used for contempt petitions alleging non-compliance with the Court’s orders, and certain other miscellaneous applications

Appeals and revisions

  • Cr.Appeal (SJ / DB) — criminal appeals before a single judge or division bench
  • Cr.Revision — revisions against orders of subordinate criminal courts
  • First Appeal and Second Appeal — civil appeals from trial and first appellate courts
  • LPA — Letters Patent Appeal, an intra-court appeal against certain single-judge orders

Before you file

Choosing the wrong proceeding can cost time. The right route depends on the order challenged, the stage of the case and whether an alternative remedy exists.
